Saints 34 (0-1) Falcons 37 (1-0) F/OT

Heart breaker in Atlanta as the Saints fall 34- 37 to the Falcons.  A lot to take away from this game the good and the bad.

Offense:

Starting with the running game, Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson ran well.  We had good push on the offensive line especially in the first half.  Ingram is going to have his year if he keeps running with determination.  Pierre Thomas had some good runs and was effective in our passing game.  We looked good in the first half imposing our will and Drew Brees was not being pressured that much at all.  WR Brandin Cooks was put on display and he was electric.  Jimmy Graham I thought should have been utilized more in the 2nd half, but he always draws attention from because of his elite talent.  This way probably a factor in freeing up Marques Colston and although his numbers were pretty good, that crucial first-play fumble in overtime was gut wrenching.  He knows he messed up and the Falcons took advantage.  Our O-line in the passing game did not perform well in the 2nd half, Brees was rattled and had to maneuver more than I would like him to do.  In the end, we had some great drives in the 4th quarter with Ingram punching it in.  Normally 472 yards on offense is good, unless the other team racked up 568 yards on your defense.

Defense:

We had our way with Atlanta early, not so much pressuring Matt Ryan, because we didn’t do that well, but we were stuffing runs.  That being said, our pass defense really didn’t show up today.  Junior Galette and Cameron Jordan could not get pressure at all on Ryan, who scrambled away many times, which led to wide open receivers.  Julio Jones was bottled up for the most part and Jarius Byrd had a nice strip on him early in the game.  Harry Douglas and Devin Hester really hurt us with their speed and because Ryan had all day and made some plays with his feet.  Many missed tackles led to big plays for Atlanta.  Jacquizz Rodgers showed he can fake out many of our defenders on that touchdown run.  Antone Smith blew past everyone with Saints defenders lunging and missing as he scored a 54 yard TD.  Ryan just had the time today to scan the field and deliver it to a pretty good group of receivers.

Saints MVP: For once I am not afraid to say Mark Ingram.  I think he ran very well today and took advantage of his opportunities in a running back committee.  13 carries for 60 yards and 2 TDs.

Look Ahead:  Saints will take their talents to Cleveland next week at 12 pm CT.  The Browns lost their first game in a close one with the Steelers 27-30.  I think we can rebound with a win for next week.  Browns’ star receiver Josh Gordon remains suspended, (unfortunately that could change this week with NFL changing its drug policies) and a couple other offensive starters Ben Tate and Jordan Cameron getting injured in their game with Pittsburgh.
